Steps to install Tightknit

Create your Slack workspace

If you already have a Slack workspace, you can skip this step.

Open Slack

Click the + at the very bottom of the left sidebar.

Select Create a new workspace

Use your work email and name it something like Ozzy's Community (you can rename later).

Add team members (optional)

If you must add someone, invite a teammate.

Install Tightknit into Slack

Go to tightknit.ai

Click Add to Slack

When Slack opens, select your new workspace (e.g., Ozzy's Community).

Grant permissions

Check all requested permissions / workspaces.

Click Allow

Authorize Tightknit to access your workspace.

Open Slack

Click Open Slack so the app appears in your Slack workspace.

Navigate to the Tightknit app

If Tightknit does not appear automutically under your sidebar apps, you can search for it.

Click Tightknit Settings

On the Tightknit app Home tab, click Tightknit Settings

Click Getting started

Read the instructions in the Getting Started module

Star the Tightknit app

Click the star icon or right click so it stays pinned in your sidebar
Create the companion forum site

Navigate Companion Forum Site

Navigate to the Tightknit Home tab and scroll until you see companion forum site

Click the main Create Companion Site button.

Walk through the wizard, accepting the defaults (keep clicking the button until it finishes)

When prompted, you’ve now created the site!

Connect a Slack channel to the site

Navigate to Feed Setup

In the Tightknit setup flow, scroll to the bottom toFeed Setup

Choose your first channel

Choose which Slack channel to connect first (for example, #help or #general)

Click Submit

This qctivates the channel to connect it to Tightknit

Create a feed for that channel (for example, “Help”)

Click Continue until it confirms the feed is live
Post your first message in Slack

Go to the connected channel

Post a message

Post a message at least 80 characters long about why you’re excited to launch the community. (You can always delete this later)

Sync to companion site

Hit Enter to send it, and it will automatically sync on your companion site.
Open and check the companion site

Navigate to your domain

In the Tightknit app Home tab, under Companion forum site, find your domain/link

Click the link on the right to open the site in your browser

Confirm your test post now appears as a topic/post on the site
Lock down access (for private communities)

Open the Tightknit app Home tab

Navigate to site access control

Under Companion forum site, click General and scroll to Site access control.

Lock down access

If you want your site to be private, change from public to Beta restricted access-Slack login required.

Click Update

Troubleshooting

  • Make sure you completed the Add to Slack flow and clicked Open Slack at the end.
  • In Slack, scroll to Apps at the bottom of the left sidebar and click Browse apps to search for “Tightknit”.
  • Confirm you are on the Tightknit app Home tab, not Messages.
  • Scroll until you see Companion forum site and click Create site again.
  • If the wizard stalls, close and reopen Slack, then retry the flow.
  • Check that the message is at least 80 characters.
  • Confirm you posted in the connected channel you selected in step 5
  • Wait 1–2 minutes and refresh the site
Best Practices
  • Pin Tightknit where you work Star the Tightknit app in Slack so it stays visible in your sidebar and you remember to use it daily
  • Start with one clear channel + feed Connect a single, obvious channel (like #help or #general) and one simple feed so members know exactly where to post
  • Seed a strong first post Use your first 80+ character message to explain why the community exists and what people should do next
  • Join Tightknit’s community Drop into #best-practices in the Tightknit community to copy what’s working for other operators and connect with other community experts
