1. Create a new channel

  1. In your Slack sidebar, click the + icon next to Channels
  2. Name your channel using lowercase letters, numbers, and hyphens (e.g., welcome-start-here, general, help)
  3. Add a description explaining what the channel is for
  4. Choose privacy:
    • Public: Anyone in the workspace can find and join
    • Private: Only invited members can access (note: private channels cannot have Tightknit feeds)
  5. Click Create, then Done

2. Set posting permissions

  1. Open the channel and click the channel name at the top
  2. Go to the Settings tab
  3. Under Posting permissions, choose:
    • Everyone: All members can post (default)
    • Admins only: Restrict posting to admins and owners
  4. Click Save

3. Add a description and topic

  1. Open the channel and click the channel name at the top
  2. Click Edit next to the description field
  3. Add:
    • Description: Permanent explanation (appears in channel browser)
    • Topic: Dynamic updates or current focus (appears below channel name)
  4. Click Save

The 60-second test: Your channel architecture passes if a new member can quickly answer: Where do I introduce myself? Where do I ask questions? Where are announcements? Where can I chat casually?
