# Single & Multi-Channel Guests

> How Slack single-channel and multi-channel guests are synced to Tightknit and how they access your community site

Slack lets workspaces invite **guests** with limited access instead of full members. Tightknit supports both guest types: they sync automatically and can access your community site without any manual invitation.

## Guest Account Types

Slack offers two kinds of guest accounts, both available on Slack's paid plans. For details on inviting and managing guests, see [Slack's documentation on guest accounts](https://slack.com/help/articles/202518103-Multi-Channel-and-Single-Channel-Guests).

| Guest type               | Access in Slack                                        |
| :----------------------- | :----------------------------------------------------- |
| **Multi-channel guest**  | Can be added to multiple specific channels you choose. |
| **Single-channel guest** | Has access to a single channel only.                   |

  Guests belong to your own Slack workspace. They are different from external
  users in [Slack Connect](/slack/slack-connect) channels, who belong to a
  separate workspace and are handled differently.

## Do Guests Get Access Automatically?

**Yes. Guests are added automatically, with no manual invitation step.** Single-channel and multi-channel guests are treated the same as full members:

1. Tightknit's profile sync regularly pulls every user in your Slack workspace, including guests, and creates a member profile for each one.
2. Because a guest has a member profile, they can sign in to your community site with Slack right away.

You do not need to invite guests to the community site separately. As long as a guest is part of your Slack workspace, they are part of your Tightknit community.

## What Guests Can Do on the Community Site

Once a guest has a profile, Tightknit treats them like any other member:

* **Profiles sync** the same way as full members. A guest's profile is created or updated when they join, author a synced message, or are @mentioned in a synced message. See the [Sync Guide](/slack/sync-guide) for the full list of triggers.
* **Posts and comments sync** when a guest sends a message in a channel that is connected to a Tightknit Feed.
* **Guests count toward your community member count**, which Tightknit pulls weekly from the number of users in your Slack workspace.

<Note>
  A guest's limited channel access in Slack does **not** carry over as a
  restriction on the community site. Guests browse the community site like any
  other member, subject to the same Feed visibility settings that apply to
  everyone. A guest does not need Slack access to a channel in order to view the
  Feed connected to it on the community site.

A guest only *contributes* content from the channels they can access in Slack. If a guest has access to a channel that is not connected to a Tightknit Feed, their activity in that channel does not sync.

## Guests vs. Slack Connect Users

It is easy to confuse guests with external users in Slack Connect channels. The difference determines whether Tightknit syncs them:

* **Guests** are members of your workspace with restricted channel access. Tightknit syncs them automatically, like any other member.
* **Slack Connect users** belong to a different workspace entirely. Tightknit ignores their messages and profiles unless you configure Slack Connect support. See [Slack Connect](/slack/slack-connect) for details.
